Fly-tippers have struck twice, dumping rubbish on farmland in rural East Herts.

Officers from Hertfordshire Constabulary are investigating incidents in a hamlet north of Buntingford and in Braughing.

Overnight on Friday into Saturday (October 4-5), macerated waste was dumped on land off the A10 at Chipping.

Another tip was reported in Hay Street, Braughing, overnight on September 24-25.

Police are working with East Herts Council, the National Farmers’ Union (NFU) and the Environment Agency to identify those responsible.

Sgt David Miller said: “Fly-tipping has a devastating impact on rural communities, particularly on farmers and landowners, who have to shoulder the huge financial costs associated with getting it removed. It can also impact food production and cause harm to the environment.

“Alongside our partner agencies, we’re conducting extensive enquiries to identify those responsible. As part of this, we’re asking anyone with information which may assist us to please get in touch.

“Did you see anyone acting suspiciously in the affected locations around the times stated? Did you capture any dashcam footage of large vehicles travelling in the area? Any information at all could prove key to progressing enquiries.”

Sgt Miller added: “Proactive patrols will continue across rural areas and we’re urging anyone who witnesses any suspicious activity to please call 999 straight away. We’d rather attend and establish that everything is in order than miss an opportunity to catch a criminal in the act.

“We’re also encouraging landowners and farmers to secure their land as best they can. Ensure good quality locks are in place and that entrances are blocked to try and prevent access.”
