Take on the Winter Reads Challenge at Bishop’s Stortford Library

Manager Ben Holden tells Indie readers what to look out for at Bishop’s Stortford Library in November

One of my favourite literary quotes is by that French-Algerian gloomster Albert Camus: “In the midst of winter I found there was, within me, an invincible summer.”

Hertfordshire Libraries’ Winter Reads Challenge, now in its second year, is an attempt to do just that. We want to help foster within all of you, dear readers, the ‘invincible summer’ of stories, facts and the imagination! Let those crisp, sunny days (and even the foggy ones) of November inspire you.

Reading for just five minutes a day can help reduce stress levels by up to 20%. Long-term benefits can include lower blood pressure, better mental health and improved brain connectivity.

The Winter Reads Challenge runs from November to January and this year we have separate challenges for children and adults, so families can participate together. And we have two iPads up for grabs - complete the book challenge and library activities for a chance to win!

Sign up at the library for the Winter Reads Challenge today and start feeling the benefits. If Albert were still here, he’d give it some thought (some deep thought). It’s no Sisyphean task, that’s for sure! One for Camus fans…

Here’s what we have on at the library in November.

Alice Hemming presents The Snow Thief - Fri 1 Nov, 11am. £5 per child, tickets available online and in the library

We are supremely honoured that “international treasure” Alice Hemming is launching her new children’s picture book, about the further travails of Squirrel, at Bishop’s Stortford Library in half term!

Alice’s series of seasons-based books, published by Usborne, are as popular in America as they are here.

An ex-teacher and librarian, Alice is a wonderful reader and performer of her hilarious, beautifully illustrated, thoroughly educational books. Craft session to follow.

This ‘n’ That - Wed 6 Nov, 10.30am-midday

Join us for a cuppa, a cake and a bit of a chat! This month’s activity/talk is Remembrance poppies.
